GeoVentus – an exciting new project management and engineering firm specialising in the mining and oil and gas sectors – has commenced operations, with Tim Magoffin joining as strategic advisor.
Tim will be working alongside our accomplished leadership team, headed up by directors Jason Vella, Oliver Ciano, and Suraj Paniker. Experienced program and project manager, Daniel Gould, will oversee operations in Western Australia, while engineering expert Luke Humphries will manage the Sydney office.
Based in Queensland, Tim brings a wealth of experience in the mining and oil and gas sectors. Born and bred in a goldmining town, mining was a natural path for him to follow.
“I grew up in Charters Towers which was once the second largest city in Queensland and owed its wealth to goldmining in the region. I fell into the mining game in my early 20s and never looked back. I worked as an underground miner, pouring bullion in gold processing plants, in open cut and underground coal mines, and various other related roles over the years. It has certainly been a journey.”
Tim’s expertise saw him land a number of highly senior positions, culminating in CEO roles before deciding to move into private consulting. During his career he also completed a Bachelor of Business and Commerce with a major in Strategic Management at Monash University.
Currently Tim is the chair of the board of the Resource Industry Network, a non-profit member-based organisation that represents regional companies in mining equipment, technology and services (METS), minerals, energy and resources, as well as those allied with the sector.
Of joining GeoVentus in an advisory capacity, Tim says he is looking forward to contributing to the team’s success.
“The people behind GeoVentus have a wealth of experience in complex project management, which companies in the mining and oil and gas sectors will be very keen to utilise. There is valuable overlap between these sectors and the Defence sector, where they have built up over 100 years of collective experience. Large-scale projects with significant capital equipment, critical safety and strict compliance requirements – along with multi-layered risks – all exist in mining as they do in Defence.
“For companies to be able to access expertise delivered with that level of rigour is a huge advantage, especially when it’s paired with a fresh perspective on the challenges facing these sectors.”
Tim also sees significant opportunities for downstream companies to leverage advice from the GeoVentus team on how to adapt their operations to serve the Defence sector.
“When coal prices drop or other market conditions shift, many mining focused businesses are left with excess capacity. Their expertise and equipment translate well into Defence applications, and the GeoVentus team is perfectly positioned to advise them on establishing a presence in the market.”
Outside of work, Tim enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid hiker and runner.
“Next month, I’ll again be acting as the Event Director of the BMA Mackay Marina Run, sponsored by the BHP’s coalmining joint venture with Mitsubishi. It’s a fundraising event for our local branch of the Leukemia Foundation, and over the past 15 years we’ve managed to raise more than $730K to support their cause.”
